Major Causes And Treatments Of Infertility In Women

Infertility in women can have a variety of causes and it is estimated that 10% of couples are unable to conceive babies due to fertility issues in women. A woman is considered infertile if she is trying to get pregnant for over a year, without any success. In women over 35 years old, the term is reduced to six months because age is an important factor in diminishing fertility.

Over 30% of the infertility cases in women are caused by ovulation problems and disorders. Luckily, most of them can be easily treated with medication, once they have been diagnosed. Ovarian disorders can be of many types. The problem in some cases is that the women does not ovulate at all or does not produce mature eggs. There are also cases in which the women suffer of dysfunctional ovaries. Hormonal problems are sometimes the culprits of defective ovulation. The hypothalamus and the pituitary gland are responsible with releasing mature and viable eggs. If they don’t function properly, ovulation is not happening as it should and fecundation is extremely difficult, if not impossible. Doctors usually turn to ovulation tests that will tell them if everything is good with the eggs or if there are problems. Past trauma or injury of the ovaries as well as the onset of premature menopause can also cause dysfunctional ovulation.

Fertility Forum – Hypoactive Thyroid

Dear Darklady,

I hope you no longer need this info, but maybe it will help someone else.

The information posted by panther12 (above) is WRONG and OUTDATED – please be aware of the NEW PHYSICIAN GUIDELINES of 0.3 to 3.0 being “normal”. Keep in mind that even this is considered to be conservative by many on the cutting edge of thyroid disease, and many people have thyroid problems even when testing within this range. There are many reasons for this. I am a perfect example of being a hypothyroid at TSH of 1.17.

What is Unexplained Infertility?
Unexplained fertility simply means that your health care providers cannot find any medical explanation for why you are having fertility issues. There are two groups of people who usually get diagnosed with this frustrating problem: those couples who are simply unlucky, and don’t have any biological problems interfering with pregnancy; and those couples who do have a medical reason for infertility, but this reason cannot be found due to insufficient medical knowledge or technology. Fertility and ageing

Genetics of the oocyte

Successful reproduction depends on oocyte quality which is determined largely by the genetics of the oocyte. The key contributing elements are oocyte maturation, spindle formation, energy supply, syngamy and early embryonic development and epigenetics; as will be seen, errors in some of these factors are more likely with advancing age. During oogenesis, oocytes acquire molecular and cellular properties in a sequential manner that confers meiotic and developmental competence to the female gamete. Following the LH surge, a competent oocyte can complete meiosis, sustain fertilization and oocyte activation, and organize the transition from maternal transcripts to gene products of embryonic origin. Several processes are involved in these complex mechanisms, including remodelling of the chromatin and the cytoskeleton, with activation of pathways involving genetic and epigenetic processes.

Disturbances during oocyte maturation and development may perturb the oocyte’s energy supply by interfering with the function and distribution of mitochondria, or alter the motor proteins of the spindle. Such disturbances may affect the expression of spindle components, leading to abnormal chromosome segregation, which has negative consequences for oocyte viability.
